Nairobi - In the end, the call for dialogue over the IEBC has been heeded.. Thanks to a TV interview by DP William Ruto.
President Uhuru Kenyatta decided Wednesday that enough was enough and there would be dialogue over the ongoing impasse on the existence of the IEBC.
Previously, all talk from the Jubilee side had been of Parliamentary decisions but the President has decided to form a committee of Parliamentarians and other stakeholders to help ease problems facing the IEBC.
" We will form a joint committee of both houses as well as other stakeholders to ensure that all issues raised over the IEBC are considered and a desirable way of dealing with them found," he said.
So what changed the President's stand so quickly and abruptly?
According to sources, a TV interview which saw the Deputy President William Ruto appear on Citizen TV and continue with the hardline stance over the IEBC broke the camel's back.
Ruto went into full attack mode on the CORD Coalition and at times got personal, referencing CORD leader Moses Wetangula and Cyrus Jirongo.
It was not the type of statement to expect from a Deputy President.
" The TV interview by the DP was discouraging. It painted the Jubilee Coalition leadership as people who were happy to see people killed and the views of others left out," a State House source told News24.
The President thus decided enough was enough.
" The Jubilee Coalition, as much as it wants to abide by the law must be seen to be flexible and to avoid tension and conflict, it was vital to at-least agree to the talks then see the way forward," the source added.
The President agreed that it was time to solve the IEBC issue once and for all in-order to stop the ongoing protests and continue with nation building, the source continued.
The Jubilee Coalition will meet Thursday to choose members of the Committee that will deliberate with the CORD side.
